My friends and I who live in DC are extremely lucky. There are about 30 free museums in the city, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden which I discovered yesterday. It is a contemporary art gallery and exhibition center in the heart of the city.
Before telling you about my experience, let me address this question: why on earth is going to a museum an act of self-care?
I found this quote from Pablo Picasso which I think answers the question pretty well: «The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls».
If you’re touched by beauty or shocked by a piece of art or just curious -whatever your emotion is- your awareness towards what you think and what makes you happy, sad, angry, etc…is nurtured. And this connection to your inner self raises the right questions; which are the first step to bringing alignment and balance back to your life.
As I was walking through the corridors, I found myself smiling and wowing, amazed at all the creations around me. At some point, I entered this state of pure, intimate joy and focus which took me back to when I was a kid, eyes, ears and soul open wide. In meditation, this state of being fully immersed in a feeling of enjoyment and fulfilment is called the flow. And it’s pretty hard to reach. So, if you get a chance to go to an art Musuem, please do.
Also, I highly recommend that you take a kid with you because their fresh eyes will see things you won’t. And their legitimate questions about what they are experimenting will force you to think and question yourself.

A lot of people think museums are boring.
And indeed, if you pick the wrong museum for you, you might get bored.
The good thing is that there are hundreds of different types of museums : Air and Space, Natural History, African American History, news, music, etc.
The most important thing is that you go to a museum on a topic you’re interested in to be able to enjoy it.
Don’t try to follow or like what others do and let your tastes talk.
This is self-care so its purpose is to make YOU feel good.
